Tips & Quirks for WebCT CE 6
Announcements
Use the Announcements tool for messages for your students. There are no upper or lower textblocks in this version of WebCT. With Announcements you can set your messages to also show with pop-up boxes, add  turn-on and turn-off dates, and you can leave them on to be available for students to refer to throughtout the semester.
Calendar
If your students or you cannot see calendar listings, check out the viewing drop down list on the top right. That might solve your problem.
Edit Headers
Limited use of these is recommended. There is trouble with setting these up even if you use a table. If you do not care about alignment shifting, then use them. You might still use the header section to show a logo or photo on the Home Page.
Discussions
Make Topics in Discussions to sort out student postings. You might have hundreds of postings. If you do not want students to create new threads and mess things up, there is a setting in the Topic setup window that does not allow students to post new messages (Create Message) but to only reply and post to messages. This does mean that you will have to create a message so students will have something to reply to in your Topic. If your class was transferred over from a 4.1 class, you have probably noticed that your Topic settings transferred over but your message under each Topic did not.
Replace a single file
You want to replace a file that you have linked on the Home Page. Good luck! There does not appear to be anyway to do what should be a very simple task. You must Remove Link by selecting the ActionLinks tool at the end of the link title and make another new link by going to Add File at the top of the page. But first, if you want to use the same icon as is there now, it is a good idea to right click on it and Save Picture As and save the icon on your computer. It is usually very difficult, and some you cannot, to locate the icon in the File Manager area of the course. Then, you can upload the saved icon.
Selective Release
Use Selective Release only to release items that do not have date and time settings already in them, such as, Assessements and Assignments do. If you see Conditional in any setting, that is the big tip-off that Selective Release is involved.
Who's Online
This tool is "Instant Messaging" for those that are online in the course. The instructor can choose to make this tool available by going to Build - Manage Course - Settings - Who's Online. Set the three top settings at True. Of course, the instructor and students can set up to be Available/Visible or Unavailable/Invisible. The instructor setting is located at the bottom of My Tool Options under My Settings in the My WebCT Page. Students make their selection by going to the Who's Online link under Course Tools.
